Letter Books
I am excited to try this out next year. Each letter has two pages (Capital/Lower case). On each page the letter is examined. First the child is able to color the letter in this gives the teacher time to talk about the letter and things that the child notices about the letter.
Next the child looks if the letter has curves or lines. I have thought of different things that the child could write in these boxes depending on their learning level. Low learners could write a :) or :( in each box stating if it does not doesn't have lines/curves. Medium level learners could write yes or no. High level learners could then write how many curves or lines. I also thought that as my students proceed through the year I could make it harder.
After identifying curves/lines the child moves on to finding the letter in different fonts. I noticed when it came to my students reading last year some of them struggled because it was not the font that they usually saw. This section exposes the children to different types of fonts for each letter. I tried to make it a big mixture of all types of font they would see.
Next, the child will focus on writing the letter the correct way in D'nealian font. I give them two letter to trace with the fingers. Then two-three times of tracing with a pencil. The a whole line that they can practice writing it by themselves. The last thing the child will have to do is look at the pictures and decide what picture starts with that letter. Once they are done they can color in the other pictures.
My plan is to copy these pages back to back and make it into a book that will take almost half the year to finish up. (We learn two letters a week). This could also used as morning work, center work (once modeled a few times), or homework.
